Kindle Unlimited Is Now Kindle+: What It Means for MM Audiobooks

Article updated October 22, 2026

Amazon announced today that Kindle Unlimited is now Kindle+, and that audiobooks are now part of the subscription for listeners in the US. You can read an ebook, listen to it, or switch between the two, at no extra cost.

The catalog mixes audiobooks recorded by narrators and audiobooks read by an AI voice. If you love MM audiobooks for their narrators, here is what changes, and how to tell the two apart before you press play.

What changes when you subscribe

According to Amazon, the subscription now holds millions of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and comics, and it wanted a name that reflects that. The “+” is the sign people already know from other subscriptions.

In practice, the big change is audio. You can start a book in the ebook and finish it in your ears on the commute, or keep both going at once: Amazon calls that Immersive Reading, and the text is highlighted as the narrator reads.

What stays the same

You can still borrow up to 20 titles at once, with no due dates, in the Kindle app, on a Kindle e-reader or on an Alexa tablet. The subscription remains separate from Prime. The price is listed at $11.99 a month in the US.

Which audiobooks you’ll find

The audiobooks Amazon announced for Kindle+ come from self-published authors who have chosen to be exclusive to Amazon, through a program called KDP Select. So a lot of audiobooks, including many indie ones, stay outside the subscription.

KindWho reads itHow it’s shown on Amazon
Audiobook with a narratorA human narrator, recorded through Audible’s ACX platformThe narrator’s name, under “Narrator”
Audiobook with virtual voiceAn AI voice created by Amazon“Virtual Voice” under “Narrator”, and a note saying the title uses virtual voice narration

“Virtual voice” is Amazon’s own name for computer-generated narration.

More AI voices within easy reach?

Sadly, I think this could mean more AI-narrated audiobooks, easier to stumble upon. For now, Amazon lets authors create an AI audiobook for free, and it joins Kindle+ automatically. An audiobook with a narrator has more conditions to meet, and the ones where the author shares the royalties with the narrator instead of paying them up front, a common setup for indie authors, can’t join yet.

A lot of indie MM romance is already in Kindle Unlimited, so I expect to come across a fair number of AI voices in the genre. Many of us pick an MM audiobook for its narrators, so I’ll be keeping an eye on how this evolves.

Personally, I’m not happy about it. If you feel the same, I’d suggest avoiding AI books and AI-narrated audiobooks, so we keep supporting art and the authors and narrators who make it.

How to tell if an audiobook uses an AI voice

On Amazon.com, an AI-narrated audiobook is labeled on its product page. I checked on an MM title today, and here is what you’ll see:

Amazon.com label: This title uses virtual voice narration, and the Virtual voice sample button
What an AI-narrated audiobook looks like on Amazon.com

The narrator line

In the product details, “Narrator” says Virtual Voice instead of a person’s name.

A note on the page

A line says “This title uses virtual voice narration”, explaining that it is computer-generated.

The sample button

The listening sample is called “Virtual voice sample”, and a few seconds are usually enough to hear it.

In search results

The narrator’s name doesn’t always show in the list, so I’d open the page before borrowing.

Your listening pays the author

When you listen to a book in Kindle+, the author is paid by page, from the same fund as reading, and Amazon says it is adding money to that fund for listening. Each page is paid once: if you read it and then listen to it, the author is paid for the first time only.

Choosing an audiobook with a narrator also supports the authors who paid someone to read their book.

Amazon says audiobooks in Kindle+ will come to “more marketplaces” without naming any or giving dates. This table reflects what I could see on October 22, 2026.

My MM audiobooks: human narrators, checked by me

I check every MM audiobook I list on the blog myself, and none of them uses an AI voice. The catalog is organized by month and gives the narrators for each book.

For ebooks, I also keep a list of MM romance Kindle deals up to date.
