Fake dating is the trope I pick when I want a romance that makes me laugh. Two men agree to pretend for a wedding, a promotion or a family that will not stop asking, they set a few rules, and they break every one of them 💍
Below are the MM fake dating books I recommend: fake boyfriends, fake husbands and two accidental Vegas weddings, in small towns, on the ice, at a fantasy court and in a werewolf pack in Scotland. Every fake relationship here turns into a real one.

A Fake Boyfriend for the Wedding (or the Ex)
A wedding, or an event where the ex will be, and a boyfriend who has to exist by the weekend. Someone gets asked to play the part, usually against his better judgment.
Best Man
Zeb Evans grew up in chaos and has spent his adult life making sure it never happens again. He runs his own employment agency, keeps work and pleasure apart, and files everything in neat labelled boxes. Jesse Reed works for him and is chaos on legs. So nobody is more surprised than Zeb when he hears himself asking Jesse to come to a wedding in the countryside and pass as his boyfriend for a few days. Jesse is much younger than him, and Zeb is his boss.

He agrees to forty-eight hours as the fake boyfriend in exchange for a meeting with a client he wants. Then Maddox kisses him in front of everyone and does not look like he is acting.

Faking It for Work
Here the fake relationship is about a career: a reputation to clean up before someone gets fired, a coming out to handle in front of the press, or a promotion that goes to the man with a partner. For couples who fall for each other at work without pretending, I have a whole MM office romance list.
Boyfriend Material
Luc is the son of two rock stars and permanently one tabloid photo away from losing his job. What he needs is a respectable boyfriend, fast. Oliver is a vegetarian barrister who has never done anything embarrassing in his life, and he agrees to the arrangement for reasons of his own. They set out to fool Luc’s employers and the press, and somewhere around the middle it stops being fake, for one of them before the other.

The Christmas Deal
Logan is an ex-Marine with no job, an eviction notice and a preteen stepson who hates him. Seth is lonely and up for a promotion that would look better with a partner at his side. The deal is simple: Logan and the boy move in with Seth for the holidays, and Logan plays the live-in boyfriend. Logan calls himself straight, the occasional hookup with a man aside, and when he finds out Seth has only ever been with one man, he offers to teach him about casual sex. They agree on rules to keep it casual, starting with no kissing.

Hockey and Baseball Fake Dating
Professional athletes with an image to protect and the sports press watching every move, in the NHL and in pro baseball.
Seal the Deal
Nicholas Whitmore plays in the NHL, has plenty of money, and is by his own admission a world-class asshole. His parents want him at a networking event disguised as his father’s birthday party, and he plans to turn up with a fake boyfriend to prove he is not the disappointment they think he is. Andrew King is the eldest of four brothers, asexual and autistic, and so used to putting everyone else first that he says yes when a friend asks him to play the part. Nicholas has already made it clear Andrew is not his type, and he cannot work out why his money and his looks get him nowhere with him.

Breakout Year
Eitan Rivkin was the first overall pick in the draft, and he has just become the first active ballplayer to come out, right before his first big contract. To practise dating in front of the New York sports press, he hires a boyfriend for the cameras. The man who turns up is Akiva Goldfarb, the first Orthodox Jewish player ever drafted, who played alongside Eitan years ago and then disappeared from baseball. Akiva now edits other people’s books to pay the rent and treats the arrangement as one more gig. Then an incident on the field puts Eitan’s free agency at risk.
The Husband Game
Dustin Fowler, captain of the Toronto Fisher Cats, went to the NHL awards in Las Vegas and came home with a trophy and a husband. His post announcing that he had married his “kitten” set the whole league talking, and nobody knows who the groom is. According to the gossip sites, it is Charlie Monaghan, a retired figure skating champion.
More hockey, no pretending
If this section is the one you came for, my MM sports romance list has the rest of the locker room, Heated Rivalry included.
Fake Husbands and Accidental Marriages
A ring raises the stakes. These marriages start as a business deal, as a night in Vegas nobody planned, or as a way to keep four kids on a health insurance plan.
The Fake Husband Deal
Noah Spencer runs a marketing and PR firm with his younger twin brothers, and he does not do relationships. He had one impulsive night with a silver fox he met in a bar, without even swapping names, and then Van Stern Enterprises hires his firm. The silver fox is Lior Van Stern, whose father has just died and left a codicil in his will: Lior has to marry within six months or lose his company shares, the museum and gardens he grew up in, and his home. Noah is the one who proposes the fake marriage.

Scoring Chance
Tanner Chance is a widower with four kids, and when he loses his job the whole family loses its health insurance. It is meant to stay on paper, but in a small town the wedding gets out, so they have to play house for real. He trades his high-rise for a cramped split-level, piles of laundry and a meatloaf he cannot cook, and shares a bed with the one friend he swore he would never cross a line with.

Julian has lived in O’Leary all his life and learned early to keep his head down. MateHub: Legend
Richard Knotz is the biggest name in supernatural adult films, and he made his brand out of the temporary bonds most shifter actors avoid. Hunter Savage is human, thinks Richard is a smug son of a wolf, and signs with him anyway because the contract could make his career: three months bonded to Richard, seven scenes, a shared apartment and one rule, do not get attached. Between shoots Richard turns out to have a soft side, and the apartment starts to feel like home.

To save his brother’s life he ends up engaged to Osian, the prince of the invaders, and has to hide what he is in the middle of a hostile court. Then nobles start dying, killed by the same magic that runs in Meilyr’s veins. The Sha nobility find him fascinating and start calling him shehzha, the word for the rare, coveted partners whose lovers stake their honour on keeping them happy. His mouth soon drags him into imperial politics, and the only people he can rely on are the soldiers assigned to protect him, one of them more than the others.

My Top Three MM Fake Dating Books
I loved every book on this list, but these are the three I keep recommending.
Boyfriend Material · Alexis Hall
For me this is the reference for the trope. Alexis Hall writes British fake dating with a deadpan humour that makes me laugh out loud, and Luc and Oliver became one of my favourite MM couples before I even noticed. If you only ever read one fake dating book, make it this one.
Best Man · Lily Morton
Lily Morton at her best. The grumpy sunshine balance is spot on, and Zeb won me over exactly when she meant him to. I still close it smiling on every reread.
The Backup Boyfriend · River Jaymes
Gay for you is the hardest version of this trope to get right, and this is one of the few where it never rings false. Dylan is never a caricature, and watching Alec slowly realise how attached he has become kept me reading to the last page.

Before You Go
Twenty-one books, from a country wedding to an alien court, and every one of them starts with two men agreeing to pretend. Most are comedies, and a few have a murderer or the mafia in the background.
